More to the point, the sun hadn't swallowed up Earth. Earth had just
been rendered impractical to inhabit due to resource depletion and
pollution. They speak at the end of the episode of reloacting
humanity back there now that the place had had a some time to recover.

Hmmm, are you sure about this? In any case the "last survivors of humanity"
were later claimed to be on Frontios (in the episode with that name).
Seems that Frontios, The ARk and Episode 2 have some things in common.
